Section 1: Psychology of Pseudo
As discussed in The Power of Pseudo Hypnosis, pseudo hypnosis tricks can benefit you in multiple ways.
Benefit #1 (Handling Skeptics/Hecklers): Because pseudo hypnosis is, by nature, more mechanical and physiological (like a magic trick) versus psychological (like hypnosis), it’s easier to pull off than regular hypnosis. Since skeptics may over-analyze the process of hypnosis while hecklers purposely make a scene out of it to gain their own spot light, pseudo hypnosis allows the Hypnotist to provide an experience that will either give skeptics an experience they’ll be left analyzing on their own or give hecklers an experience that will shut them up. In either case, both types of individuals are usually silent for the remainder of your performance (if you call them out before the main show like I do), which makes your job of hosting a quality show for everyone else easier. I was actually called out by a gentleman during a show I was hosting for a Jewish holiday known as Purim this past Tuesday in Ohio. I gave the gentleman the limelight he desired as he explained the last time someone tried to hypnotize him they failed. I performed a pseudo hypnosis trick and the gentleman smiled, shook my hand and walked back to his table where he was quite for the rest of the show. Since the technique to that specific pseudo hypnosis trick was something I’ve developed and tweaked over the years, I’m including it in HypnoKick’s Members Area in the Training tab.
Benefit #2 (Proof of Concept): I’ve been in multiple scenarios where someone who may wish to work with me asks me to perform a quick demonstration. It’s during times like these that if you can demonstrate something that’s quick (30-60 seconds), effective (works on just about anyone) and impressive (something they wouldn’t expect), you’re more likely to catch their attention than actually trying to hypnotize someone. Yes, you could absolutely provide a legitimate demonstration of hypnosis in 60 seconds. However, put yourself in the shoes of the client you’re trying to land. If you saw a Hypnotist hypnotize someone on-the-spot and that person woke up feeling relaxed and rejuvenated, that might seem interesting. On the other hand, if that same Hypnotist seemingly removed someone’s ability to swallow with the snap of their fingers, that would seem way more impressive, right? Exactly! Sometimes you need to have a go-to demonstration that provides someone an immediate “WOW” factor to keep their interest. This week’s lesson provides you with 2 immediately applicable demonstrations that will help you generate that “WOW” factor as a proof-of-concept to your future prospects.
Benefit #3 (Spice Things Up): After having toured and hypnotized from California to New York for nearly a decade, I enjoy spicing up my impromptu street demonstrations or stage performances. When it comes to stage, the easiest way to execute this is by calling out the biggest skeptic/heckler in the room (referring to “Benefit #1”). These types of individuals, in my experience, are easiest to find in High School and University crowds as they enjoy using their skepticism/heckles to steal the spotlight from others. Even if you’re fortunate enough not to encounter such individuals during a stage show, you can still integrate a pseudo hypnosis trick into your performance in various ways. If you find someone isn’t reacting much to regular hypnotic commands, you could perform the pseudo trick on them instead. If everyone is reacting to your hypnotic commands, you could perform the pseudo trick on the most reactive person on stage. My educated guess would be that if someone’s already reacting theatrically to your regular hypnotic commands, performing a pseudo trick on them will liven up the event that much more (making them an even bigger star of the show). Needless to say, the last two ways you could integrate pseudo tricks into your stage shows are also how I integrate them into my street demonstrations.
After recently performing my own variation of a pseudo hypnosis trick I saw a Magician perform, it made me question: Could these tricks/demonstrations be considered suggestibility tests?
This was based on a recent personal experience where, after being told I wouldn’t be able to swallow, I managed to focus and force myself to. Granted, despite “beating” a physiological trick by surpassing the limitations I was verbally given, it did hurt and caused me to cough (so I wouldn’t recommend it).
Regardless, if I was able to still manage it while others claim it isn’t real hypnosis, my rebuttal would be: Isn’t it [to some degree]? After all, if you simply accept being told you can’t swallow while someone like myself manages to, weren’t you [to some degree] suggested? Convinced? Hypnotized? Despite it being a more mechanical demonstration than psychological, were you not swayed?

Whether trying to prove your immediate value to a prospect or desiring an easy go-to demonstration that enables you to confidently look like you can hypnotize anyone, anywhere at anytime, the two pseudo tricks you’re about to learn will help you accomplish both.
Section 2: 2 Pseudo Tricks
Pseudo Trick #1 (Eating Berries): You invite someone to grab an imaginary berry between their index finger and thumb as you do the same. You instruct them to put it in their mouth and chew as you do so yourself. As you pretend to chew your berry, you ask them to imagine what their berry tastes like in their mouth and what textures they notice. Speaking to them as if you’re actually chewing a berry, you direct them to swallow their chewed berry as you do it. You invite your volunteer to grab another berry with you, throw it in their mouth and begin chewing again. This time, instruct them to lean their heads all the way back as you do the same for visual aid. Quickly lower your head while instructing them to stay in that position and that, when you count to three and snap your fingers, they’ll find they’re unable to swallow their chewed berry. You count to three, snap your fingers and say, “Try to swallow but you can’t. The harder you try to swallow the more impossible it becomes. You realize you can’t swallow at all.” People tend to be caught off gaurd at this moment. Give them a moment to let the reality of the situation sink in. Then ask them to lower their head and look at you directly in the eyes as you say, “You can swallow again right NOW!” snapping your fingers on “NOW”. They will swallow and either immediately reflect on what just happened or have a facial reaction resembling, “What just happened?” “Why couldn’t I swallow?” and/or “That was crazy!” I initially got this idea from a Magician who performed it with the idea that the person was taking two gulps of water. I recently featured this version in the March 2020: Get Hypnotized or Get Paid YouTube episode. Someone recently said this routine was possible due to a muscle strain. While that’s true, because you’re making it difficult for your tongue to fully open the gateway to your throat for foods/liquids, it’s still not impossible. In fact, I recently tried this in my kitchen when I asked myself, “If I really tried, could I still manage to swallow?” The answer: Yes. However, it’s both a literal and figurative pain…so I wouldn’t advise it.
Pseudo Trick #2 (Strength Test): Invite a touch-looking fellow to push you into a wall. Stand in front of a wall, place both your hands flat on the wall and ask the person to place their hands on your back and to slowly push you into the wall (increasing the pressure of their push if needed). After they manage to push you into the wall, look them deeply in the eyes and inform them that no matter how hard they try to push you this next time, they won’t be able to. Get back into position, try again and to everyone’s surprise, they’re unable to push you into the wall. After they’ve given up, invite some people to stand behind them so you have a line of people trying to push you into a wall. Amazingly, not even a line of people will have enough strength to squish you against the wall. Reason being, the first time you have your volunteer push you into the wall, you kep your arms loose, limp and partially bent. This way, when they put in the effort to slowly push you into the wall, you’ll naturally let it happen (hopefully slowly/safely so no one actually gets hurt). Then after looking them in the eyes and “removing their strength”, you get in the same position, only this time when you partially bend your arms, you stiffen them. When your volunteer goes to push you against the wall, your stiffened/bent arms will absorb the force of their pressure on your back, enabling you to keep yourself from actually getting squished. Granted, it’s best you choose someone of size you genuinely believe you can resist the force of. If, for example, your a 130 pound man letting a 170 pound man push you, you’re more likely going to be able to resist versus a 90 pound kid being pushed by a 170 pound man. It’s up to you whether or not you wish to end the trick there or give your volunteer’s strength “back” and repeat the first part of this trick as closure.
